Please, tell me more about my magical lady parts

I know I’m a little late to the scorning-Todd-Akin party, but since I first read his comments (about pregnancies caused by rape) this morning, I haven’t been able to get them off my mind:

It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

It makes me feel a little better that social media seems to have taken it upon itself to collectively ridicule and mock Akin.  It confirms that people are mostly saner and more rational than he is.  But doesn’t it really only take one person, given the powers of persuasion and delusion?

Akin’s comments take this fight against women’s rights to a new level.

There is morally condemning a woman for having an abortion.

There is asserting that a rape victim must have been ‘asking for it.’

There is attempting to pass laws that will leave women with no greater ability to care for their children, and no safe way to have an abortion.

And then there’s making up your own bullshit science to support your argument. This may not be as immediately detrimental as passing laws that send women to back alleys with coat hangers, but it’s just as dangerous in the long run.

If politicians don’t feel that they have to be accountable for the accuracy of their statements, where does it end? While many people clearly immediately saw the errors of Akin’s statement, not all publicly stated lies take on such obvious, ridiculous forms as the all-powerful uterus. And we are primed to believe people who are similar to us, people we have previously agreed with.

So, in the words of Todd Akin, can we try to shut this whole thing down? Can we stick to facts and opinions, and leave lies out of politics? And - is it possible? - could we maybe recognize that when we have no facts to back us up, there’s a tiny chance we might be wrong?
